ABU RCN51 for HÖ

Since both of my Shimano spinning reels (haspelruller) are more or less eaten up by saltwater, I’m planning on making the change to bait caster for coastal fishing, primarily after trout.
The reels I have in mind are the ABU RCN51 or perhaps RCN41. I’m planning on using it on an 8’6” to 10’ rod. Unfortunately Danish dealers don’t have that many multipliers in stock so I can’t get a hands-on impression. Therefore I have a few questions for you guys:

• Is the Record suitable for saltwater?
• How low weights can it cast?
• Does it work with an braided line, such as PP 0,28 line?
• Which size is best suited for the purpose?
• What alternatives should I consider, in the same price range and of course made for left hand wind?

Write back in Swedish or English… no big difference to me.

If your attitude is "no limit" I would recommend a reel from http://www.sportfiskeboden.com/default.asp modified by Mr UT at this site.
Pricey? Yes.
Also what kind of rods are you supposed to cast with, that is as important
as the reel. My suggestion is that you go to Stockholm and test the reel out, this shop got a marina where you can try
it out.

It should be an out-of-the-box reel. If necessary it can be modded later on.
It will most likely be paired with an casting rod in the area of 10-40 gram 8’6”-10’.

Is the ambassadeur Revo availble as lefthand retrieve? I know that some use
this reel for seatrout and are pleased with it.
Don´t know if it´s considered corrosion resistant?

Sure there are left hand models of the Revo. But I don't if it can tolerate the saltwater, either...
However I really like the classic look of the Record.

Yes, the Record is cool looking, what budget are you allowing yourself to?
I still think a modified Record would be the best option.

Here in Denmark I can get a Record for about 1000-1100 Dkr. Im finding that a reasonable prizetag all considered.

Det är med tungt hjärta jag måste hissa en stor varningsflagg för saltvatten och alla typer av s.k. whifflespolar, dvs de med hål i (sitter i Recorden och i Revon). De låter saltvattnet rinna rätt in i rullen där det stannar och sen skapar grogrund för korrosion av värsta sorten. Allt tal om "saltvattens beständiga lager" har visat sig vara tomt prat. Saltvatten knäcker lagren genom spaltkorrosion.

Man kan dock lätt skydda sig mot det värsta genom att lägga en bit tunn tape underst på spolen. Vanlig brun packtape eller för all del transparent kontorstape funkar bra. Och sen är det viktigt med underhållet, inget underhåll = ingen rulle, sorry!

Av de Recorder jag delat på som använts flitigt vid HÖ-fiske har samtliga haft upprostade spolaxellager och anfrätta bromsdelar. Revorullarna mår även dessa riktigt dåligt av saltvatten, de tål det inte. En entusiast har "konsumerat" tre stycken under den gågna vintern trots tape mm.

Min varmaste rekommendation är 5501 CS ProRocket om det skall vara en vänstervevad rulle direkt ur kartongen, annars (varning för reklaaaam!!!) finns det trimsatser till Recordrullar som åtgärdar alla problemen.

How much does an upgrade like this cost - theoretically, on a free marked, somewhere in Gustavsberg - if I upgrade it myself or have a specialist making it for me?

You can most probably do the upgrade yourself and there is a step by step instruction enclosed with the kit. Drop me an e-mail with your address, and I'll send you the instruction by email. You can also send in the reel for an upgrade if that's preferable.
