  • Rod for jerking - questions?

    Hello

Im looking into buying a new rod, thats gonna be used only for fishing with a specific 100 gr. jerkbait

At the moment Im using a 6,7f 160 gr. BFT Roots G2 rod for it, and even though i like the rod, i find that the rod doesnt load Well while casting, and is just a bit to stiff in general. Its also a bit awkard to set the hook on long Line cause of the short length.

My wants would be a rod around 7,3 feet with a casting weight up to around 120 gr., so the sweetspot when casting should be around 100 gr., without feeling the rod is overloaded.
I have several Daiwa Prorex AGS rods, and truly love them, but it seems hard to find a rod that fit my needs and still has the same action as the AGS. And thats okay, i Can work with something with a slower action.

The rods i have been looking into:

Svartzonker Black series Pro ‘Jerk and Twitch’ 7,3F 30-130 gr.

Grim Reaper Pitch Black 7,3F 150 gr. from Söder

Gator Smallbait Explorer 7.1F 110 gr.

St. Croix Legend Tournament Downsizer 7,3f 3 oz.

Any thoughts or experiences with these rods, or something similar?

Thanks in advance, and Sorry for the english, feel free to answer in swedish!

      Thanks for the fast answer.

Im sure its a nice rod, but i Cant really tell if the casting weight is What Im looking for, since its so specific for this one particular 100 gr. jerkbait?
Have you tried any of the other rods?

          Thanks for your time Cozmoz.

Im leaning towards buying the St. Croix or Grim Reaper rod.

Im unsure if the St. Croix rod has to much power. Some places claims it can cast 150-200 gr. baits, and if thats true i think the ‘casting sweetspot’ of the rod is to High.

The same goes for the Grim Reaper, maybe its to stiff, but at least its not costing me 400 euro to find out.

How do u like the action and känsla in the Grim Reaper Haspel rod?

Nej några 200gram är inte bekvämt att kasta med downsizern tycker 120-130 absolut max (sweet spot 80-100ish för mig) och till jerk ja till allt annat nej då gör stc topntail allt bättre även jerkbaits tycker jag personligen.

What other rods have u fished, and liked? What rods do you bring on a ‘big’ fishing trip?

Many from the St Croix lineup most of the muskie (legend tournament) variants except the ones over 8’6ft.

Other pikerods from Illex, Gunki, Shimano, Dobyns, Westin (edge), Daiwa prorex ags, Svartzonker blackseries, Bft. Conclusion: I’ve had way too many pikerods and liked a lot of them but its hard to explain over the internet in text the difference in how the rods feel in your hand.

Mainly i like rods around 8ft +- half a foot for bigger baits (not perch/trout baits). I’m 180cm tall and I could ”jerk” a 8’6 rod in a boat without problems after practicing a couple of fishing trips when i stopped using a jerkbaitrod several years ago. I see no benefits in using a shorter rods only limitations for me personally.

Now when I’m fishing for Pike usually a St croix legend elite musky 8ft-3oz as an all rounder, St Croix LTB Swimbait 7’11-4oz for smaller baits and a Shimano Zodias 7’2 42gr or a St Croix legend extreme 7’6-1 1/4oz for ”pike finesse” like small crankbaits, swimbaits and jerkbaits. If I want to throw big baits a G.Loomis 8ft 4-10oz but i seldom fish big baits now a days.

                    Great to hear Apan!

I agree that the shorter rods have alot of limitations, but i do quite alot of jerking in the summer, and i find that jerking very fast, with long spinstops, some days are superior to other methods. Personally the High tempo jerking is very difficult/impossible with longer rods. From now and untill May i dont even bring the shorter rods.
