I would be very interested in hearing about Lakes habits over the entire year, with regards to location, especially the autumn.

I used to leger succesfully for burbot in my local river. The best time for this (south/east Sweden) was dec to feb, when they're migrating to their spawning sites. The road to success was to play a roving game until the burbots revealed themselves. I've found that the burbots follow the same 'paths' on their way to their spawning sites. So, anywhere you catch one can be a sweet spot.
I caught them in dephts of 1-5 meters. Mostly on rocky bottoms.
A simple running rig with fish strips (herring or smelt) or a big cooked prawn.
A fun way of fishing... if you can stand the cold winter nights

Thanks Larsch! So you don’t rate the autumn for burbot fishing? I cant handle frozen rod rings and -25 to -30! It gets real chilly up here!

I believe my local burbot spawning grounds are in fact under ice, if local information serves me right. So I fancied trying for them this autumn with rod and line. So you reckon it will be a very hit and miss affair, trial and era, or do they have favourite haunts in the autumn as well?

I've tried it as early as mid november, but as I remember it, we only caught small specimens at that time. But, fishing our usual swims, we probably were at the wrong place for that time of year.

I think You can have success with your fishing at that time - You being further up north and all.

Trial and error kinda goes with the sport, don't you think?

As it happens I’m a bloody expert at the miss rather than the hit!

I just want to try cutting some corners, there’s hell of a lot of water to cover & I want to try, if at all possible not wasting the limited fishing time I have.

I hear from a few guys that they can be caught in the autumn, in the pools bellow power stations (kraftverk) and such. But I suppose it varies greatly depending on local habitat and conditions. Any way its looking like I shall have to fish through the ice if I want to locate my local burbot as they have there spawning grounds under ice if local information is up to scratch!

I live in Norrköping, and the burbot fishing was in Motala Ström. It's an organized trout and salmon fishery these days, and that means closed season in the 'burbot months'.
But, who knows... maybe I'll extend the pike deadbait sessions into the evenings this winter. I'm sure there's burbot above the power stations too.
Talking about it made me sort of peckish.

William, if there are power plants, you should start your search for burbot there. They are usualy gold mines! It´s often deep water below power plants and burbots are munching dead or stunned fish which has been sucked down trough the turbines..

Thanks Ari! The water round my local power station is a mine field of sharp rocks, and snags. Lure fishing there came with great cost! What kind of tackle/set up would you recomend? Am i right in thinking that you should use a long lead like the one in the photo? I know small bombs or round leads get caught between stones and rocks very easy.
