Ballasjön lies approximately 45km east of Gothenburg (E40 towards Borås) just outside Bollebygd town center. The lake is a typical Swedish forest lake. It’s a well-stocked lake as far as Swedish lakes go and relatively easy to catch in a 24-hour session.
It is roughly 15ha in size and has a maximum depth of 10 meters.

The Carp were first introduced in 1983 by Leif Andersson. Thirty Common Carp were originally implanted, but were all found dead the year after as the water PH levels were too low.
In 1987 Leif tried again to implant Carp into Balla, this time 75 carp were introduced between 250g & 1kg. None of these carp were seen for 2 years and were also presumed to have died.
Again another attempt to implant carp happened in 1989. This time 10 carp were put in between 5hg & 1.7kg. Nothing happened until 1991, when a carp of 2.1kg was caught. They had grown from 250g to 1kg in the first year and from 1kg to 2kg in the second year. In 1995 the carp were weighing around 5kg. But also there was a Common carp that had survived from the 1983 implanting and and weighed 7kg
I have been fishing Ballasjön a lot over the last 5 years and in which time have had some good results. It is a nice lake and well stocked, the carp are growing quite fast at about 500g - 1kg a year.
I believe that the Summer 2005 looks like the time that the first 20lber (9.1kg) will be hauled out of Ballasjön. They are not very big yet and average between 6 - 8kg.
The lake record currently stands at 8.9kg which was caught in June 2004 by Andreas Andersson
Myself & a fishing friend caught 3 carp over 8kg in 2 days in July 2004.
We caught a total of 10 carp in 3 days, 3 carp over 8kgs, 5 carp over 7kg and the other 2 were 6kg+.
I have a good idea now where the carp are in the lake at different times of the year.
I believe Spring is the hardest time to catch them, (just after the ice has melted) and if you fish in the wrong place, more than likely you are going to blank.
I fished different places on the lake each spring (April/May) for the last 5 years and for the first 3 years I blanked. I kept moving swims until I eventually found them. This was in April 2004, when I had 5 runs in 2 nights.
I landed 2 and lost 3.
They were both Mirror Carp and weighed 6.0kg & 7.8kg (which at the time became my new Lake PB )
I fished exactly the same place this year (April 2005).
I had 2 runs and landed one. Everyone else blanked. (There were 4 other people fishing the lake at the time)
In my personal opinion I think that a fruity or creamy flavoured bait works best in Balla and also a "pellet" flavour does well. I personally have not caught anything by using a "Fish" flavoured bait, so I tend to stick with "fruit" or "Cream".
The bait that I have had the most success with in Ballasjön are Energy Baits Scopex Liver & Magic Fruit. These 2 baits have accounted for at least 80% of the carp that I have caught in Balla and I have been using them for 2 years.
Fishing Licenses cost 150 kronor for 12 months, 60 kronor for a weekend or 30 kronor per day. These can be purchased from the bailiff, Leif Andersson who lives beside the lake, just follow the signs “fiskekort”.
My PB is 8.0 kg caught in August 2004. This was caught on Magic Fruit 20 mm pop up.
I took Jeanette to Ballasjön for a weekend in May 2005 (After 196 hours at Härlanda without a fish). She caught her first carp there, which dragged the scales round to 8300g!!! She caught a futher 2 carp that weekend at 5760g & 7670g, where all i could manage was a Tench 1.7kg!!
All the carp were taken on Energy Bait's Scopex/Liver & Magic Fruit.
